Scanning mirror and glass surfaces (mirrored sliding-door wardrobe)

Mirrors and glass are challenging for LiDAR because light is reflected or passes straight through. A sliding-door wardrobe with mirrors is a typical example that easily causes errors in the model.

How to scan a mirror/glass wardrobe

  1. Open the wardrobe doors and slide them towards the middle.
  2. Start in one corner of the room.
  3. Scan around the room without scanning straight at the mirror or glass surface.
  4. Finish in the other corner.

If you scan straight at the mirror, the surface is often read from floor to ceiling as a doorway, and you get a «gap» in the model.

Note: The same applies to large window surfaces and shiny surfaces. Avoid scanning directly at them, and supplement with photos and manual measurements if needed.
