Drawing a 3D model from a floor plan — step by step

The drawing editor in the browser lets you work with floor plans in two ways. The tool is a separate option at the bottom centre in the browser, next to 2D, 3D and furniture.

Two uses

  • Building a 3D model from a floor plan: if you have a floor plan — or no scan — you can draw it up and get a full 3D model. Useful, among others, for Android users without LiDAR.
  • Adapting a scanned floor plan: start from an existing scan and change the layout to show the customer what your quote involves (moving or removing walls, new rooms, new doors and windows).

Building a 3D model from a floor plan

  1. Upload the floor plan as PNG or JPG (PDF is not supported yet — see the separate article).
  2. Calibrate the scale: set a known measurement, for example 333 cm, and add «0» for the millimetres.
  3. Draw the walls with the rectangle or polygon tool (polygon for rooms that aren't rectangular).
  4. Draw the walls in the middle of the wall, not along the edge — the adjacent room should share the wall. The tool «snaps» and the wall turns green when it's shared correctly.
  5. Add doors (press d) and windows (press w). Set known measurements manually, for example door 90 cm, window height and sill.
  6. Adjust the ceiling height per room as needed.

Adapting a scanned floor plan to your quote

  1. Open the project and go to the floor plan in the drawing editor.
  2. Use the same tools to change the layout: move or remove walls, draw new walls, and add or remove doors (press d) and windows (press w).
  3. Adjust measurements and ceiling height to how the new solution should be.
  4. Share the updated floor plan and 3D model with the customer, so they can see your proposal.
Note: If you draw walls along the edge instead of in the middle of the wall, the doors won't go through the wall and the 3D model won't look good. Manually set measurements are not overridden by a new calibration.
