Setting up an MCP connection in ChatGPT (OpenAI)

This guide shows you step by step how to connect ChatGPT to Wenn Property's MCP server, so you can use our tools directly in ChatGPT conversations.

What is MCP?

MCP (Model Context Protocol) lets AI assistants like ChatGPT connect to external tools and data sources. When you connect ChatGPT to our MCP server, you get access to Wenn Property's tools directly in the chat.

Requirements

Before you start, check that you have the following in place:

  • A ChatGPT plan that supports Developer Mode. Currently this is supported by ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Team, Business and Enterprise. The free plan does not have access.
  • The web version of ChatGPT (chatgpt.com). Developer Mode is not available in the mobile app.
  • Admin access (only relevant for Team/Business/Enterprise) — a workspace admin must enable Developer Mode before regular users can use it.

Step 1: Enable Developer Mode

The process depends on whether you use ChatGPT individually or as part of an organisation.

For individual users (Plus/Pro)

  1. Go to chatgpt.com and log in.
  2. Click your profile picture at the bottom left, and choose Settings.
  3. Navigate to Apps (previously called «Connectors»).
  4. Under Advanced settings, turn on Developer mode.

For Team/Business/Enterprise (admin task)

A workspace admin must do this first:

  1. Go to chatgpt.com and log in as an admin.
  2. Open Workspace Settings.
  3. Go to Permissions & Roles.
  4. Under Connected Data, enable the toggle for Developer mode / Create custom MCP connectors.

After the admin has enabled this, individual users in the organisation can turn on Developer Mode in their own settings (see the step above).

Can't find Developer Mode?

See the troubleshooting section at the bottom of this article.

Step 2: Create an MCP connection (app/connector)

Once Developer Mode is enabled, you can create the connection itself:

  1. Go to Settings → Apps.
  2. Click Create app next to Advanced settings. This button only appears when Developer Mode is enabled.
  3. Fill in the following:
    Field Value
    Name Wenn Property
Description Wenn Property tools and data
    MCP server URL https://connect.wennproperty.com/mcp
  4. Under Authentication, choose OAuth.
  5. Tick «I trust this application».
  6. Click Create.

Note: If the connection fails, try changing the URL ending to /sse instead of /mcp — i.e. https://connect.wennproperty.com/sse. Some MCP servers use different endpoints for streaming.

Step 3: Complete the OAuth login

After you click «Create», ChatGPT will open a login window:

  1. You're taken to Wenn Property's login page.
  2. Log in with your Wenn Property user account.
  3. Approve the connection when asked.
  4. You're taken back to ChatGPT, and the connection is ready.

If the login window doesn't open, check that your browser isn't blocking pop-ups for chatgpt.com.

Step 4: Use the MCP tools in a conversation

Now that the connection is created, you need to enable it in each conversation where you want to use it:

  1. Start a new chat in ChatGPT.
  2. Click the plus icon (+) in the message field.
  3. Choose More, and then Developer mode.
  4. You now see a list of available apps — choose Wenn Property.
  5. Write your message as usual. When ChatGPT needs data from Wenn Property, it will suggest a «tool call».
  6. Confirm the tool call by clicking «Confirm». ChatGPT shows you the details of what it wants to do before you approve.

Important: You must choose Developer Mode and the app for every new conversation. It's not a global setting that applies to all conversations automatically.

Troubleshooting

«I can't find Developer Mode»

  • Wrong plan: Developer Mode requires at least ChatGPT Plus. Check your plan under Settings → Subscription.
  • Admin hasn't enabled it: For Team/Business/Enterprise, a workspace admin must enable it first (see Step 1).
  • You're using the mobile app: Developer Mode only exists in the web version (chatgpt.com), not in the iOS or Android app.
  • Browser issue: Try clearing the cache or use a different browser window.

«The connection fails or tools don't load»

  • Double-check that the MCP server URL is correct: https://connect.wennproperty.com/mcp
  • Try the alternative URL: https://connect.wennproperty.com/sse
  • Make sure you've completed the OAuth login.
  • Try deleting the connection and creating it again.

«The tools don't appear in the conversation»

  • Remember to choose Developer Mode via the plus menu (+) in each new conversation.
  • Check that the Wenn Property app is selected in the Developer Mode menu.
  • Try refreshing the app: Go to Settings → Apps, select the Wenn Property app, and click «Refresh» to fetch updated tools.

«The OAuth login doesn't open»

  • Check that pop-ups aren't blocked in the browser.
  • Try temporarily disabling any ad blockers.
  • Use Chrome or Edge for the best compatibility.

Security

  • ChatGPT always shows you what it plans to do before it calls a tool. Always read through the tool call before you click «Confirm».
  • Pay particular attention to tool calls that change data (create, update or delete something), as opposed to pure read operations.
  • Don't share your MCP connection with unknown or untrusted MCP servers.
