Understanding the exterior 3D model of roof and building

Wenn Property automatically builds a 3D model of the roof and building based on public map data. The model shows roof faces, walls and recesses — ready to use for planning and estimating.

How it works

The model is generated automatically when the project has a registered address. Go to «Utside» (Exterior)«Bygning» (Building) in the left navigation. At the bottom of the main window you can switch between 2D (from above) and 3D view.

Roof faces with pitch and orientation

Each roof face is shown with its own area, pitch and compass orientation. Tap a face to highlight it in the model and see the details in the right panel:

  • Area — the size of the roof face in square metres
  • Pitch — the roof angle in degrees, calculated directly from the roof geometry
  • Orientation — compass orientation with a degree value

We calculate the pitch and orientation values ourselves from the points in the roof face, which gives more accurate figures than the raw data from the map providers.

Dormers and recesses

Dormers, chimney ducts and other recesses in the roof are shown as openings in the roof face. Click a roof face in 3D to select it — the click always hits the nearest face, so you can select a dormer roof without selecting the roof behind it.

Exterior walls

Under «Bygning» (Building)«Vegger» (Walls) you'll find each wall surface with area and compass orientation. This data makes it easy to calculate exterior area for facade work, painting, cladding and other maintenance.

When you select a roof face or wall surface, a 2D drawing of the face is shown in the right panel with dimensions along each edge. The drawing shows the face from above (or straight on for walls), with a scale at the bottom. Click the drawing to open it full size.

Measuring tool on the roof

In the 2D roof view you can use the measuring tool (ruler icon in the top left, or press M) to draw lines across the roof and get:

  • Slope distance — the actual distance along the roof face, as if you laid a tape measure on top of the roof
  • Plan distance — the horizontal distance (as the crow flies)

Click to place points, double-click or press Enter to finish. The tool also handles lines that cross several roof faces — the line "drapes" over the roofs and follows the pitch of each individual face.

Good to know

  • The model is generated automatically based on roof geometry and terrain. Roof faces, walls and measurements are approximate values and may deviate from reality.
  • Details such as roof overhangs, windows and doors are not shown.
  • Complex roof shapes such as upturned eaves (kinavipp), hip roofs with different angles and the like can give less precise values. Accuracy varies from municipality to municipality and from building to building.
  • We always recommend checking the model visually and verifying measurements before use — ideally with an inspection or photos.
  • The feature requires the project to have a registered address, and is available for most Norwegian addresses.
